IFR Asia's 2026 Asian Private Credit Markets Roundtable will take place on the morning of Tuesday July 7, 2026 in Singapore.
Private credit is becoming an established part of Asia’s funding ecosystem, with global asset managers setting up funds here and banks building up their capabilities.
Asia is flush with liquidity thanks to well capitalised domestic banks and the choice of offshore and onshore debt markets, but private credit is still finding a role. And while initially some thought private credit in Asia would be restricted to opportunities with distressed credits and special situations, the opportunity is turning out to be bigger than that.
Private credit providers are also able to help fund exercises like mergers and acquisitions or business transformations that might not suit the bond or syndicated loan markets. Transactions can be tailored to suit borrowers and lenders, and increasingly private credit providers can even fund equity tranches.
As regulations encourage banks to free up and recycle capital by selling loans or executing synthetic risk transfers, private credit investors can take exposure.
And even high-profile issuers that have ample access to offshore and onshore debt markets have still chosen to fund through private credit in some cases.
While Australia and India have seen plenty of activity, there are still jurisdictions within Asia where private credit has yet to gain traction because the legal frameworks are not friendly towards foreign creditors. In addition, the lack of depth in secondary credit markets compared to other regions – for example, the dearth of investors focused on distressed debt – means there will not always be a way to exit positions smoothly.
Some banks in the region are investing in private credit on their own books, while others have formed joint ventures with asset managers, and some are happy to benefit from the growth of the asset class through fund financing.
IFR Asia will convene a panel of finance industry experts to examine the prospects for the growth of private credit in the region and what the challenges are for banks and asset managers.
Topics to be discussed will include:
- How does private credit in Asia differ from other markets?
- Which countries in Asia present the best opportunities for private credit investors?
- Where can private credit fill a niche?
- Is private credit being used in any new industry sectors in Asia?
- How will offshore and onshore rates affect issuers’ appetite for private credit?
- What challenges are there for private credit providers in Asia – for example, around due diligence and performance data?
- Can synthetic risk transfers provide an opportunity for private credit investors?
- Many asset managers have raised huge Asia-focused private credit funds and are now under pressure to deploy capital. Is this distorting the market or intensifying competition?
- Are any areas of private credit showing signs of stress? Are any unwelcome practices emerging?
