The 2025 IFR ESG Roundtable will take place on Wednesday May 21, 2025 at the Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars.
As the green bond market enters a new era with two different issuance standards operating alongside each other, European public-sector borrowers must navigate this complex new environment.
Do they adopt the European Union’s new Green Bond Standard now that it has come into force? This would enable them to appeal to the most demanding dark green investors and leverage their previous efforts to align with the EU’s taxonomy of sustainable activities. But meeting the GBS’s stringent requirements may be very challenging.
Or do they wait to gauge the strength and depth of investor appetite for GBS debt while continuing to issue against the Green Bond Principles administered by the International Capital Market Association? A wait-and-see stance would be less disruptive (and could still make use of partial taxonomy alignment with technical screening and ‘do no significant harm’ criteria, as well as minimum social safeguards). However, it would forego early-mover advantages – including possible premium pricing.
The Roundtable will draw on IFR's extensive industry contacts to bring together a diverse panel of leading European public-sector credits to explore these and related themes in depth.
